In August 2026, a group of medical professionals from Kazakhstan, currently undertaking professional internships at the University of Lancashire (ULan) in Preston, visited Cardiff as part of their wider academic and cultural programme in the United Kingdom.

The participants came to the UK for long-term professional placements, typically lasting between three and six months, with many completing approximately six months of training and professional development in Preston.

Alongside the core internship programme at ULan, participants also take part in regular monthly visits to different cities across the UK. These trips form an additional part of the internship experience and are designed to broaden participants’ understanding of British academic life, culture and regional diversity.

During their two-day visit to Cardiff, the group explored the city, visited the university area and saw Cardiff Castle, one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the Welsh capital.

The monthly trips complement the participants’ professional training by giving them the opportunity to experience different parts of the UK beyond their host institution. For specialists spending several months in the country, this wider exposure contributes to a fuller understanding of the British educational environment and provides additional opportunities for cultural exchange and professional networking.

The Cardiff visit was therefore not simply a leisure trip, but part of the broader international experience associated with the internship programme. Together with their professional activities in Preston, these regular visits help participants gain a deeper understanding of the academic, social and cultural environment of the United Kingdom.
